Prevalence of non-communicable diseases and risk factors of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia in four local government areas in Nigeria: a cross-sectional study
October 8, 2023
Summary:
This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and risk factors for pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (PE/E) among women of reproductive age (WRA) in four local government areas in Nigeria. Data was collected from 639 women using systematic random sampling, with physical and biochemical measurements taken for a subset. Results showed a high prevalence of raised blood pressure (36%), raised blood sugar levels (10%), moderate or severe anemia (19%), and overweight/obesity (52%). Additionally, 58.8% of women reported multiple risk factors for NCDs and PE/E. The findings highlight the need for early detection and intervention for modifiable risk factors to improve maternal health outcomes.
