Mapping the Potentials and Limitations of Using Generative AI Technologies to Address Socio-Economic Challenges in LMICs

March 31, 2025

Summary:

As the capabilities and availability of GenAI expand around the world, so have the development of applications utilising these technologies. Drawing on the experiences and lessons learnt from LMIC-based innovators utilising GenAI technologies to address socio- economic challenges, this article demonstrates that there is significant potential to use GenAI to accelerate progress toward the achievement of developmental goals. However, there are equally serious risks to the individuals and societies that these technologies seek to benefit, and significant barriers to be addressed to ensure AI development and use in these contexts is equitable, inclusive and just. Tackling these issues will require expanding the evidence base on GenAI usage in LMICs - including learning from the experience of innovators in these regions, ensuring adequately funded enabling environments for local and responsible AI innovation to thrive, and establishing rights-based safeguards to protect individuals and societies from AI- related harms.
