Formative Evaluation and Adaptation of a Hypertension Extension for Community Health Outcomes Program for Healthcare Workers within the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria
November 26, 2023
Summary:
This qualitative study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and contextual factors for implementing a hypertension-focused ECHO (Extension for Community Health Outcomes) program for Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory. Between September 2020 and December 2020, interviews were conducted with seven global ECHO hubs specializing in cardiovascular disease or nephrology to assess relevant factors. In February 2022, focus groups with 42 local frontline healthcare workers provided insights for local adaptation. The findings, mapped to the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, showed the ECHO model's feasibility for hypertension education but highlighted the need for strategies like effective communication, participation incentives, and ongoing recognition. These insights informed decisions about training content, format, implementation strategies, and fostering a community of practice for the program's rollout.
