Barriers to health in women of reproductive age living with or at risk of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria: a Photovoice study
January 1, 2023
Summary:
The study explored the health barriers faced by women of reproductive age (WRA) in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria, particularly those living with or at risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Using the Photovoice method, 24 women documented their experiences through photography and individual interviews. The analysis revealed six key themes: food and nutrition, home and family, neighborhood environment, economic instability, religion, and the low prioritization of self-care. These findings highlight the environmental and social challenges limiting women's agency and healthcare access, underscoring the need for improved, woman-centered approaches to NCD prevention, diagnosis, and management in Nigeria.
